Just arrived for testing 25mm wide 50mm deep carbon clinchers. The ERD is 545mm and they appear very round.

The rim tape bed is smooth.

I went for this finish and you can see the profile. The internal width is 21mm.

The weight of the rim is 499g and the other was 498g. I bought a 20H for the front and a 24H for the rear.

I built the wheels up with a Sapim CX-ray spokes and Miche Primato hubs.

The rims are very good to build with some of the best I have ever built with in fact. They are very round and very flat. This means very even spokes tensions (+/- 5%) and the both wheels were <0.2mm round and 0.1mm latera wobble.

Velo plugs did not fit the spoke holes. The tyres mounted are GP4000s 23mm which mearured up at 26mm wide after fitting so a flat tyre to rim profile which apparantly is a bit moe aero.

The weight of the wheels built is 1650g but that is with 450g Miche hubs. If lighter hubs are used, cheap Novatec A291/F482 or more expensive DT Swiss 240's Chris King R45 or extralite hub then a wheelset close to 1500g is possible or less (1400g) with the right hubs.

The ride with the wheels is sublime. Handling is impoved compared to the very same tyre on a narrow Kinlin XR-200. The extra weight is not that noticeable but the aero benefit is at higher speed. I don't want to take them off now. Braking is very good even though I am usinglight but flexy KCNC CB1 calipers with cheap Baradine carbon pads. Anything that CB1 caliper brake well has to be good.

It is a wheelset that do not want to take of now. Wide is good if you have the clearance.

Kinlin XR-200 wheelset

The Kinlin XR-200 is a very light alloy clincher rim - 385g! For it's weight it is quite stiff but it is also cheap. The rim is no welded and the join can be seen but Kinlin do make the join smooth as well.

A 24 spoke front and 28 spoke rear is fine climbing wheelset for 80 kg ish riders or under. The wheelset above is built with Sapim Laser spokes, alloy nipples and Miche Primato hubs.

The weight of this wheelset is 1480g. If lighter hubs (Miche hubs are 450g per pair) are used a lighter wheel would result. If extralite hubs are used a wheel set down to just over 1200g would be possible but that would be very expensive. Lighter Novatec hubs the A171/F172 or the A291/F482 is how to get the wheels set weight down. 1350g is possible with the A291/F482 hubs without breaking the bank.

These rims are quite durable too if you use the soft brake pads. Abrasive pads will pick up metal from the rim. Koolstop Salmon pads work well.

The rims make a good budget lightweight wheelset but do not confuse that with one that falls apart quickly. I have put 3000 odd miles on mile in the last year without issues I have hung them up for a while now as I am testing something else. I will use them again when I go somewhere hilly or on hill climb TT's.

The H Plus Son Archetype is wonderful rim to build with and ride. It is wide for a start and tyres take up a wider profile this always helps so long as you clearence.

The above build is with Miche Fixed gear hubs the rims used are grey and the spokes are Sapim Race. I forgot to record the weight but the rims are 480g each and 64 sapim Race spokes and brass nipples in the 286mm length are 460g. The hubs being the large flange variety are over 500g/pair. If I remember right the rear was 1044g without tape but with track nuts

The rims are very round and it impossible to feel were the rim has been welded. I suspect H plus Son have used electron beam welding to join the rim. All archetype rims seem to be very consitant, they all build up with even tension (+/-5%) and radial runout of les than 0.3mm and lateral runout of 0.1-0.15mm is very possible every time. They really are as good as there reputation suggests.

The rims are avialble in black, slate grey and polished silver. The slate grey and black have anodised brake track which will wear of. The black is available in 20H, 24H, 28H, 32H and 36H, Grey in 24H, 28H, 36H and silver in 28H, 32H, 36H.

Some more pics of the archetype build with Miche Primato hubs Shimano Dura Ace 9000 and my favourite Campagnolo Record.
